about

I hope you're all keeping safe during what is undoubtedly a difficult period for everybody. This seemed like an appropriate time for a giveaway.

The Other Side is taken from the sessions for my forthcoming solo album (which may or may not be called Late Night Laments and may or may not be released sometime before 2054).

While other material on the album is brand new, this song originates from 1986 and marked the first collaboration with my future Plenty bandmate Brian Hulse. It is not intended to be on the final release.

The song - which has been wholly re-recorded and partially re-written - was mixed by Steven Wilson on 19th March 2020.

It's free. You may or may not like it.

lyrics

The Other Side

I see lines drawn,
Carved into the stones
That run across the ruined streets.

I hear wood crack
Where plants are overgrown -
Souvenirs of old defeats.

Guards march in the freezing night.
Stamping in time they move
From wall to crumbling wall.

I see white beams
Sweep across the dark,
Lighting up the city’s skies.

I stand alone, scared,
Dragged into a fight
Where the anger never dies.

Here, now, where the shadows fall,
I know that it’s almost time.
I’m waiting for the call.

A voice on the radio
Tracks your passage as you come in from the cold.

The beams stand still,
The marching stops,
Then the signal fades.

I hear the signal fade.
